You know you’re a member of the “old guard” when you stop pushing for change and looking for new ways to do things. Instead, you turn around and tell those who are interested in new ways that they can’t, or shouldn’t do it. You’re no longer looking over your shoulder to see who’s catching up; you’ve turned around and declared the race over.

But the younger folks just won’t stop running. A lot of us older folks keep going, too. We’re no longer in the lead, but we’re contributing. So we fall back, gasping and wheezing, and we blow right past the “old guard” who tell us it’s all over.

They say a wise person never tells all he knows. I hope that in starting a new weblog, I don’t wind up showing more ignorance than wisdom. From what I’ve been learning about blogs, one’s ignorance is revealed quickly when one blogs it.

About the blog title. It’s “Ale Man Says”, because I’m an ale man. I’m into beer and ale. I drink beer, I think about beer, I read about beer, I sample beers, and I make my own beer. I try the local beer everywhere I travel. I have been known to drive 750 miles with a half-barrel of homemade beer to supply a party.

That explains why I call myself “ale man”. But the blog will not be about beer alone. It will be what I’m thinking on the day I write it: what the Ale Man says.
